miR-483-5p Promotes Lung Adenocarcinoma Invasion and Metastasis

The nodal regulatory properties of microRNAs (miRNA) in metastatic cancer may offer new targets for therapeutic control. Here, we report that upregulation of miR-483-5p is correlated with the progression of human lung adenocarcinoma. miR-483-5p promotes the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) accompanied by invasive and metastatic properties of lung adenocarcinoma. Mechanistically, miR-483-5p is activated by the WNT/β-catenin signaling pathway and exerts its prometastatic function by directly targeting the Rho GDP dissociation inhibitor alpha (RhoGDI1) and activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule (ALCAM), two putative metastasis suppressors. Furthermore, we found that downregulation of RhoGDI1 enhances expression of Snail, thereby promoting EMT. Importantly, miR-483-5p levels are positively correlated with β-catenin expression, but are negatively correlated with the levels of RhoGDI1 and ALCAM in human lung adenocarcinoma. Meet Dennis, Ride to Conquer Cancer Rider


Dennis McLaughlin isn’t particularly athletic. Nor is he a fundraising expert or known within local cycling circles as a die-hard rider.

But what Dennis lacks in athletic ability he more than makes up for in determination, in spirit, in having a survivor’s mentality.

During a routine colonoscopy last year, Dennis underwent surgery and chemotherapy. Now, at 61 and in remission, he’s ready to support the research needed to make sure more people like him have options when it comes to cancer care.

Dennis has joined the growing ranks of riders and teams, for the first annual Philadelphia Ride to Conquer Cancer.

“I saw the TV commercial for the ride and thought, ‘First annual? Let me try it out!’” he says. “I registered, went to the information session and started planning out how I’d raise the money and train for the ride.”

A cable technician in Upper Darby, PA, he hadn’t been on a bike since he was a kid. He hooked up with a local bike shop, got a bike and his training gear, and slowly began to train.

“I’m definitely a ‘fair-weather’ rider,’” he says. His wife and children are supporting him, but joke that Dad may not be the fittest rider in the bunch.

“I just decided I was going to go for it,” he proudly quipped. “If riding and fundraising money for cancer research can help one person not go through what I went through, I’m happy with that.”

So far, Dennis has raised $450, and plans to raise $2,100 more before the October ride. He even joined a team, the GIST-Busters, with fellow rider, Susan Ranck.

“I can deal with the soreness from riding if it means we’re closer to a cure for cancer.”

“I truly believe there will be a cure within my lifetime.” -John, Cancer Survivor and Ride to Conquer Cancer Rider

John Robinson was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) in 1984, and given a 35 percent chance of survival. He beat the odds, and will be riding for the cure in the Ride to Conquer Cancer this October. Read more about John on his blog here.

When I went home form the hospital, I looked in my family’s 1970 encyclopedia, to learn more about my cancer only to realize that the chance for survival back then was 0 percent with a life expectancy of less than six months. I beat the odds, thanks to the research and work done by the doctors, nurses, volunteers, and fundraisers back then when there wasn’t a cure. It is amazing to see that today, with the innovative research and therapy happening at the ACC and by the work of Dr. Levine and his lab, survival for patients with ALL are approaching 90 percent!

As a survivor, I believe I have a responsibility to pay it forward just like those prior to my diagnosis did. I need to share the importance of research dollars that will help current and future patients beat their odds. To celebrate my 30th year cancerversary, I will be participating in the Ride to Conquer Cancer this October to show my support.

To see how research has evolved over these last 30 years is a great stride, but there is still much more we can do. I truly believe there will be a cure within my lifetime and as a survivor I want to say I had a part in finding that cure. We need to make sure we can open encyclopedias and see 100 percent chance survival for cancer!

Breast Cancer can be easily cured

Breast cancer is a dangerous disease which develops from breast cells. It starts off in the inner lining of milk ducts that supply them with milk. It is mainly seen in females. The distinct lifestyle and eating habits in females in rich and poor countries are also factors for such diseases. It is more commonly seen in elderly women.

A mature female’s breast consists of fat connective tissues and thousands of lobules- tiny glands which produce milk. The milk of a breast feeding mother goes through tiny ducts (tubes) and is delivered through the nipple.

The breast like any other part of the body, has billions of microscopic cells. These cells multiply in an orderly fashion- new cells replaces old that died.

Cancer begins when these cells refuse to die and go on growing continuously and spread all over. Cancer that begins in the milk duct is known as Ductal Carcinoma, it is the most common type. Cancer that begins in the lobules is known as Lobular Carcinoma, is much less common.
Invasive and non- invasive breast cancer.

Invasive cancer- the cancer cells break out from inside the lobules or ducts and invade nearby tissues. With this type of cancer, the abnormal cells can reach other organs of body such as bones, lungs or liver.

Non-invasive cancer- this is when the cancer is still inside the place of its origin and has not broken out. They can eventually develop into invasive breast cancer.

Symptoms

  1. Headache: The first symptom is when your head starts aching continuously or in breaks, which only a doctor or nurse can guess about it which makes them realize.
  2. Rash or swelling near breast
  3. Lumps in breast, but the majority of lumps are not cancerous; women should get them checked by health care professionals.
  4. Pain in the armpits or breast that does not seem to be related to the women’s menstrual period.
  5. Redness of the skin of the breast.
  6. A rash around one of the nipple.
  7. A swelling in armpits
  8. An area thickened in the breast.
  9. Nipple changes its appearance or may be inverted. Its size changes too.

Causes

  1. Getting elder: It is mainly seen in elderly women and there is comparitively higher risk in it.
  2. Genetics: Some close relative of yours may be suffering with it and due to this there are chances that it might get transmitted to you. Though breast cancer is not hereditary.
  3. History of breast cancer: Women who have had non-invasive cancer in the past are more likely to develop this disease again which can even develop into invasive cancer.
  4. Women who have started having periods earlier have a high risk of developing breast cancer.

Treatment
It depends on patients all over health and how far it has spread. The main breast cancer treatment options may include,

  1. Radiation therapy
  2. Surgery
  3. Biological therapy
  4. Hormone therapy
  5. Biopsy
  6. Chemotherapy
